Siemens PLM Software

Software Engineer

Global Technical Access Center

I have worked two co-op rotations with Siemens PLM Software, and I will be returning there for a third rotation in the Fall.  My first rotation, I was part of their Global Technical Access Center and I was responsible for learning how to install and debug their organizational database system called Teamcenter.  I also learned how to set up the framework for the software which included setting up communications for Java, a database, and a web server.  Additionally, I worked on customizing Teamcenter for clients using style-sheets, and I wrote mass amounts of documentation to help walk users through the installation process.  I was also given the opportunity to work with Siemens' CAD software NX, in which I was able to design parts, models, and assemblies and even get them to interact with eachother in 3D simulations.

This first rotation was very much an opportunity for me to get exposure to the corporate atmosphere and gain familiarity with a finished software product.  I learned how to communicate with a team, when to ask questions, which questions to ask, where to find answers on my own, and who had the answers I needed.  Along with that, I got experience working with a large scale software product, as well as CAD experience with a high end CAD product.  All these experiences will greatly benefit my professional development as I interact with new teams, search for answers to new problems, and work to solve new software problems.

Summary:

•  Responsible for basic installation and debugging of Teamcenter (organizational database system)

•  Worked with NX (CAD software) and Teamcenter to design parts, models, and assemblies

•  Participated in Client Customization of Teamcenter Software

•  Created documentation to make technical tasks easily and more precisely reproduced

Custom Application Design

My second rotation with Siemens, I worked in the same department, but instead of working with Teamcenter Installation, I began doing custom application design.   My first project was designing a standalone C# application to streamline repetitive file distribution and organization.  The intent was to reduce the amount of clicks required to upload/download reports and organize them in a more logical manner.  My second project was updating a customer-facing Java application that eliminated repetitive file collection tasks using a presentable user interface.  The intent of this was to streamline the collection process by adding fields to collect more relevant information as well as structuring the interface to have a more aesthetically pleasing design.  My third project was creating a web-based application using HTML/CSS, JSP, and SQL which reduced maintenance of large sets of excel data and increased organization and visual-appeal.

My second rotation was focused on getting hands-on-experience with a code base and starting to build applications from scratch.  I learned how to decipher old code, how to build on top of old code, and how to create my own functioning code and applications.  The best experience from this rotation was creating the web application from scratch - meaning I had to learn how to create a database, design a web interface, setup a web server, get everything to communicate together, and then make everything look nice and actually function.  These experiences of full-stack application design, as well as my experience building on top of old code, will help me develop professionally throughout my career as I continue to implement the engineering process during the development of new and improved applications.

Summary:

•  Created a web-based application using HTML/CSS, JSP, and SQL which reduced maintenance of large sets of excel data and increased organization and visual-appeal

•  Designed standalone C# application to streamline repetitive file distribution and organization

•  Updated customer-facing Java application that eliminated repetitive file collection tasks using a presentable user interface
